Craning a large sculpture in Paris for shipment to New York

One of our international partners specialising in international art transport recently called on
Transexpo Île-de-France to pack, crane and transport a large sculpture in central Paris.

Our American client is one of the leading art transport companies in the US. Its New York agency
called on us to transport a sculpture purchased by one of its private clients, a major collector, to
decorate his second home in Long Island.
A turnkey service Transexpo provided a complete service, taking care of all aspects of the project.
One of our project managers first made a visit to the sculpture's starting point, to take its measurements and provide suitable packaging for international transportation.
Our carpentry department made a bespoke crate for the work, using ISPM15 treated wood so that it could pass through US customs without incident. We took care to design a crate that was strong but as small as possible, to minimise air freight costs.
As the owner of the work did not have a security escort, we called on a freelance restorer who drew
up the condition report before the work was packed. Our client also asked us to take out ad valorem
insurance to cover the work during its entire journey.
Our team gently wrapped the work in the crate, handling it with a 3-tonne aluminium gantry. The
crate containing the work was then positioned on the large terrace of its former owner's Haussmann
apartment, in order to carry out the lifting with one of our crane arm trucks. Our lifters then loaded the crate into our Fine Art truck parked on the street.
Administrative and customs management for international shipping
The work remained in transit for a few days in the vaults of our Paris branch, allowing time for the administrative management of this international shipment and in particular to handle customs formalities.
Our expert international shipping coordinators booked air freight on a direct cargo flight to New
York. Our airport supervision team was present while the crate was loaded onto the plane, in order to oversee all stages of handling in the airport cargo area.
